A few days into my stay in Vitoria, I headed up to Bilbao to visit a long-time friend. I grabbed a bus from the Estacion de Autobuses (bus station) in Vitoria, and Gaizka met me at the other end, the new Termibus station in central Bilbao.
We decided to take a long walk along the Ria de Bilbao, a river that runs through the heart of the city. The heat pounded down on us, and eventually, we encountered a spider sculpture and beside it, the Guggenheim museum. With yet another opportunity to enter the Guggenheim, once again, we meandered on, apparently eager to avoid air on and enjoy the relentless heat.
We headed to the Casco Viejo or the old part of the city. After walking on some grass, Gaizka discovered to his horror that he had stepped in a fresh poo. In a calm and collected manner, we approached an old fountain where Gaizka gracefully and patiently washed it off.
Our next stop was a famous Turron (nougat) and ice-cream store called Turrones Ivanez, run by a local family here in Bilbao. Spoiled for choice, I took at least five minutes to decide on flavours for my two scoops in a wafer cone. Gaizka chose a medium sized paper cup which was heaped with delicious ice-cream. We enjoyed these sitting in a nearby park, and later headed to the Azkuna Zentroa.
Gaizka wanted to show me the curious designs of pillars created by different sculptors and architects, as well as the interesting ceiling. It features a transparent swimming pool floor seen from within the Azkuna Zentroa main gallery. The view was unlike anything I had ever seen before.
Throughout our afternoon, we stopped to enjoy tapas and refreshing drinks. El Pais Vasco is super famous for its gastronomy, and Bilbao, one of the three principle cities of the Basque country, is no exception. I had intended to eat as much as possible while there. Thankfully, Gaizka loves eating too, and we often joked about deserts, and Gaizka’s experiences visiting my sister in England.
After a hot day and plenty of walking, we returned to the Termibus. I hopped on a La Union bus and headed back to Vitoria.
Thank you for taking the time to read this article. It means a lot to me.

With thanks! Valuable information! https://bzp65.com/
Awesome. Thank you.
Looks like a great day doing as the locals do. That spider is something else haha. There used to be one like that at the Leeum Samsung Museum here in Seoul. I wonder if it’s the same artist.
Possibly. I’ve seen the same spider sculpture in another city too.
That lunch looks scrumptious and Spanish architecture and sculptures are pretty fantastic too. Great to hear you had a great time with your friend, despite the poopy accident, but hey, in Russian culture, stepping in shit is considered to bring luck!!!
Haha.. Gaizka was a good sport about it, and didn’t even seem to break a sweat. 🙂
This looks like a full day. What I love the most is the beautiful photos you have. Lucky to have an amazing photog friend with you who shares the same interest. And you have photos that really stand out there for me… the one with the light under you and your arms on the Azkuna Zentroa following its angle.
Hummm.. I’m not 100% sure which picture you mean, but thank you. Yes, I wish I could see Gaizka more often. I think we’d spend our days taking photographs!
the spider sculpture in most museums looks amazing
Yep.
